AEROTRANSTORNADOS Nº56 - Notes on the Celourico da Beira's FIAT G.91

First noted by me in 7 June 1999, following information published in a planespotting magazine (not sure which), I had mistakenly identified the FIAT G.91R/3 displayed in Celourico da Beira, in a public garden/kids playground located in the Largo da Corredoura. 

The aircraft was noted on that date without the c/n serial plate thus the information I had was as this being the c/n 91-508, thus exWGAF 32+39 (previously HD+498, EC+313, MD+313, BD+270 and 32+39), and noted as one of the BA2 Ota decoys, noted as cannibalized sometime in 1984.  

This aircraft was lend to the Celourico da Beira municipality in the 70’s or 80’s, for display, being first noted here in 1989.

In a visit to the Museu do Ar, in Alverca, in September 2000, I was able to consult some data on the aircraft lend to several municipalities, and found that the FIAT of Celourico was noted as being c/n 91-508 (ex32+39), and noted there by 14 December 1993. Which in a way, corroborate the previous information.

Later on, was noted dumped in the outskirts of the city, near the IP3 road [IP5 between exit 23 and 24, North side].  I was able to access the aircraft in 22 April 2001, and took a few more shots of it. By the time the WGAF markings were more visible, because the paint that was covering it was fading out. By this time, I corrected some of my previous notes, including the information on EMOOS 2007, which was also correct. Unfortunately the information I gave to for Scramble no.263 (sorry guys!).  

From now, there was no doubt that the FIAT noted by me in 1999 and 2001 was in fact exWGAF 32+69 (c/n 91-539).

The same aircraft was noted in the following month, during a protest in front of the Portuguese Parliament, in Lisbon, related to the demand by Canas de Senhorim, in Nelas, to become a council. I presumed then that the aircraft went back to the dump site or to Canas de Senhorim. 

I’ve visited Canas de Senhorim in 12 September 2001, but could not locate the aircraft, and several attempts to contact the promoter of the protest were unsucessful.

Some years after, a video showing what appears to be a ex-WGAF FIAT G.91 submerged in a dam, for training purposes for divers of firefighting corporations. This appeared in a blog of a diver in 2011, it was most likely placed here some years before. The dam is Barragem de Calde, Várzea de Calde, in Viseu.

This one could be the “lost” FIAT from Celourico da Beira... exWGAF32+69…?

Other video, possibly from the same a/c apeared on FB around November 2020. 

Apart from all that, by some odd reason I persisted in the mistake in my FIAT list, which was, corrected this week.

Bragança (castle)
The tower of the castle of Bragança, houses a small military museum that includes a single aviation relic, the tail fin and most part of the propeller of an Aeronáutica Militar aircraft. The photo and the notes near by it, refer to a crash landed Potez 25A2, AM no.9, that occurred somewere near the city on the 21st July 1932.  
However I was called to reason by friend of mine that this is actually part of a Avro 504, the vertical tail plane and a broken propeller. Why the two are together it’s a mistery to me ... any thoughts?

Viseu (airfield)
The FIAT G.91R/4 5408 was restored to a new life, a FAP/Museu do Ar team restored it in June. Noted 1 July 2019.

Viseu (city)
Força Aérea Portuguesa commemorated it’s 67th anniversary in the city of Viseu, thus many events were held here all during the week before the 1st of July. The official ceremony parade and air display took place on the actual day, and included passages of several aircraft formations, first a four ship formation (F-16’s – 15107/QRA, 15112/QRA, 15141 lead a/c, 15101), after a three ship formation lead by a C-130H with a C-295M and a C-295MPA as wing planes , after another time the 4 F-16’s in a diamond formation, ending with a seven ship formation with the C-130H (leader) + 2 C-295’s + 4 F-16’s.   
The exhibition of FAP activities took place at the local Multiusos pavilion from 27th ? June, and included the following a/c: ‘15100’ F-16A (dep. BA5 on the 21th June), 15247 Alphajet A, SE.3160 19377 plus  Blanik 12101.
Museu do Ar SE.3130 Alouette II (A13, exBAF), was displayed in the locar Ice Palace shopping center.

Touring through the central part of Galicia (Spain), on the 7th September 2019, picked up a few a/c, some operational and some wrecks&relics,
Vigo (airport) - Local resident w&r Cessna Ce421B EC-CDD (s/n 421B-0348) in one of the roundabouts.
Noted on tarmac: EC-JET Sikorsky S-76C of Guarda Costas “Pesca 2” (s/n 76-0578); EC-IGM Eurocopter AS365N3 of Aduanas/Agencia Tributaria, plus Bombardier CRJ-1000 reg.9H-MOX of Binter Canarias.
Santiago de Compostela (airport)
Local w&r at the entrance of the military section of the airport is SA-330J Puma HD.19-08 (c/n1307).
Noted on the military taxiway: Eurocopter EC-135T2 HU.26-07/ET-195 UME (s/n 0557); and Grupo 43 Canadair CL-215T’s UD.13-25/43-25/1119 and UD.13-30/43-30/1125, this last departed shortly after (noted North from Santiago, flying over the highway in the direction of a Coruña airport).
Noted also: Aer Lingus A320-200 EI-DEN.

Later on, on the 15th November, in Salvaterra do Miño – still present at SEGANOSA[http://www.seganosa.com/], the MiG-17 that has been noted here since 1998. The aircraft is painted in the livery of the Soviet AF, wearing the nº31. According to EMOOS the aircraft is exBulgarian AF nº31 (c/n 1194, Bulgarian "triangle number" 21-7207). Aircraft visible from the outside but if asked one can go inside and take better pictures.

Alfeite
At the Centro Social do Alfeite still lingers on the FIAT G.91R/3 nº 5469 (exWGAF30+50; c/n 91-307).  Noted on the 11Feb2018, plus again in 10Jul2018 (confirmed c/n on plate!);

Alverca (Gago Coutinho high school)
The Cessna T-37C, numbered 02412 (s/n 62-5936, c/n 40736), wearing the Asas de Portugal c/s, is visible and accessible outside, just to the right of the school entrance. l/n 10Feb2018

Alverca (DGMFA)
Noted during open base day/commemoration of the 100th anniversary, last 22nd September 2018.
All the Museu do Ar branch of Alverca was also open and all the a/c were noted in their usual places, except for DHC1 1376 and DH.82 “144”, which were inside the DGMFA compound in one of the exhibitions, which outside was lead by 19513 SA-330 fuselage.

One of the open storage compounds had 9 Alphajets nos. 15223, 15232, 15242, 15243, 15245, plus 4 and another one (should be 15212); these are being stored with the two FTB’s previously stored near hangar 15 nos. 13704 (c/n 0005), 13706 (c/n 0007).
Other compound, near hangar 15, continues to store the 8 Cessna T-37C nos. 2402, 2403, 2404, 2406, 2421, 2425, 2426, 2428, plus the CS-DDC Piper PA38  of Aero Clube Alverca do Ribatejo.
Inside the Museu do Ar open storage compound, nothing new: DC-6 6706; SC-54 6606; G.91’s 1804, 5472, 5473; Ju52 6301; Noratlas 6412, 6417, 6420; C-45 2415; Piper Cub 3201.
Near the airfield control tower were noted 7 Emb-145, not all in PGA-Portugália Airlines livery (3 white o/a), identified: CS-TPG/Melro, CS-TPH/Pardal, CS-TPL/Pisco (white o/a), CS-TPM/Rola, CS-TPN/Brigão.
A single C-295M of Esquadra 502 was noted doing air baptisms (no.16710).

Alverca (city)
New adition to the w&r map, is the T-38A nº 2612 (s/n 61-0903; c/n N5269) that was placed on a plinth just by the entrance of the A1 whilst coming from the city. f/n being assembled on site in early June 2019.

The local branch of the Associação de Especialistas da Força Aérea (AEFA), maintains the FIAT G.91R/3 no.5455 (c/n 91-440, exWGAF 31+72) , preserved in a small monument. l/n 11Feb2018

SETÚBAL (Instituto do Emprego e Formação Profissional)
Confirmed visually the existence in the training centre of the Reims-Cessna FTB-337G nº 13711 (c/n 0012, ex DGMFA), used as GIA in the aeronautical section of this professional school. The aircraft is in several stages of restoration for the Air Force. l/n 9Feb2018
Tancos (military complex)
The FIAT G.91R/3 (c/n 91-345, exWGAF 30+82), was by 10Feb2018 n/n, confirmed to have been scrapped.
Gate Guard at former BA3 (Air Base no.3) is CASA C-212A no.16507 (s/n028; c/nA2-3-28).
On the other side of the road, the former Base Escola de Tropas Paraquedistas, has on display FIAT G.91R/4 FAP nº5432 (c/n 91-4-0145, exWGAF BD+377), noted on the same day.

2018.07.04 - confirmed at a local photography shop (with over 120 years of existence), Casa de Fotografia Andrade, the existence of photos of the following crashes,

Noteworthy at  Bragança airfield, at the base of the T-33, a plaque in memory of the first landing ever to take place in Bragança, on the 29th August 1925, a Vickers Valparaíso II, of  the Arma de Aeronáutica do Exército (Army Air Corps). The aeroplane was piloted 

by Lt. Sérgio da Silva and Capt. Carlos da Cunha Almeida as an Observer.

Vila Nova da Rainha

Displayed at Vila Nova da Rainha, in a roundabout between the local primary school and the N3 road, is the Alphajet A nº15231 (exWGAF 40+96; c/n 0096; exBA11).

Following several events commemorating the 100th anniversary of Portuguese Military Aviation, this Alphajet integrates a monument inaugurated on the 17th July, 2016.

Must visit also, at the local train station, thus where was located the former army barracks (Escola Aeronáutica Militar) -- at least one of the buildings still exists -- a set of panels illustrating some of the first steps of military aviation in Portugal. (noted 4.9.2016)
